Susan St John has a long-held passion for beautiful style. Since fulfilling her ambition to start her own Interiors business, Susan has worked on both commercial and residential projects, including the iconic “Russell Hotel” – a boutique hotel in Sydneyʼs historic harbourside district, The Rocks.
Based on Sydneyʼs lower North Shore, her design philosophy is one of understated elegance. Her classic and sophisticated interiors, inspired by the architecture and decor of Americaʼs Long Island and New England, are translated to work in an Australian context. Susan combines both vintage and contemporary pieces to create a toned-down style
which is inviting, yet defined.
“Sydney is all about casual beach living, but the city also reflects a lifestyle of sophistication; something that is so evident in the “Hamptonʼs style” on New Yorkʼs Long Island, and that look works brilliantly here as well. We have so much sunlight to play with!” says Susan.
Colour is the key. Crisp whites, sun-bleached blues and neutral-coloured schemes play a large part in Susanʼs elegant style. Interiors are relaxed and light, and natural textiles such as french linens and antique tickings often team up with white slipcovered furniture and vintage accessories to complete the look.
“These looks are accessible and achievable but balance is the key. When creating an interior style for my clients, I often find that less is more. I take into account their needs and their lifestyle; the way they and their family like to live. Interiors need to be practical, but that doesnʼt mean they canʼt be beautiful as well.”
No matter what the requirements are of each job, whether it is a simple one-off colour or design consultation, right through to project managing an entire renovation, the idea is to create a style that is timeless rather than being driven by popular trends which can date quickly.
“Something I hear often from my clients is they want to know that what we are creating will look as good in ten years time as it does today.”
Susan has a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Media, as well as a Diploma in Creative Visual Arts (Interior Styling). She is an Associate Member (NSW) of the Design Institute of Australia.
